Question:
Salaam,
Hope you can help me. I would like you to tell me about someone that’s passed away coming into your dreams and asking for something.
My mum passed away 8 years ago. Ever since her death I have every so often had dreams with her in it asking for something or to do something. I have also had other people that knew my mum telling me they have had dreams of my mum also asking and to tell me to get something or do something.
What does this mean? I have been told that whenever this happens to so as she says. For example if she is asking for clothes then to buy clothes with intentions for her and give to the poor that will wear it. Or food that I make something and then dodua that the food reaches her
Please advise me as I dont want to do anything against islam
Answer:
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
We pray that Allah Ta‛ālāshowers upon your mother with His infinite mercy and grace. May Allah Ta‛ālā grant her JannatulFirdaws.
At the outset, dreams are of the three types: the good ones from Allah Ta‛ālā, the evil ones from Shayṭān and those which are expositions of one’s thoughts from throughout the day. If one sees a good dream, one should praise Allah Ta‛ālā and pray that it comes to realization. If one sees a bad dream, he should seek refuge from Allah Ta‛ālā.
While it is true that some dreams hold meanings, the interpretations of dreams cannot be taken as absolute. The dream in your query may refer to your mother requesting you to perform good deeds on her behalf. This by no means is obligatory and you are not obliged to carry out what she instructs you to carry out in your dream.
We advise that you recite the Qur’ān daily, as well as other good deeds, and send the rewards to your mother. The Prophet SallallāhuAlayhiWasallam has mentioned
إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، وعلم ينتفع به، وولد صالح يدعو له (رواه الترمذي: 1376)
Translation: “When a person passes away, all his actions come to an end except for three things: sadaqah jariyah, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him.” (Tirmidhi 1376)
You should strive to be a righteous child as mentioned in the above Hadith, so that you may be a means of benefit for your mother.
