Asalaam o alaikum. Alhamduleila I have just given birth to a healthy baby boy ma sha Allah. We want to name him and really like the name Raffi or Raffee. We are aware that these are names of Allah and names of Allah should have the prefix Abdul meaning slave. We want to know if we can name our child Raffi or Raffee without the prefix Abdul? Some people say because Raffi is a name of Allah it requires the prefix Abdul but some Islamicbsources say that some of Allahs 99 names possess qualities which can also be possessed by humans and that in this case the prefix is not needed, for example in the case of the name Ali which is the 36th name of Allah a prefix is not needed. Please could you let me know if it is permissable to name our son Raffi or RaffeeInSha Allah.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
You enquire regarding the names; Raffi (رافع) and Raffee (رفيع).
The name Raffee (رفيع) means high, high ranking, lofty etc. It is a suitable name to keep.
The name Raffi (رافع) is among the ninety-nine names of Allah Ta’ala (The Exalter, The Elevator). The ninety-nine names of Allah Ta’ala can be divided into three categories.
1) Those names which are the Ism al-dhāt(personal names) of Allah or portray an attribute that is exclusive to Allah. These names cannot be used as a name without adjoining the word Abd. For example, the names Allah, Rahman, Razzaq, Ghaffar, etc.
2) Those names that portray an attribute that is not exclusive to Allah. Such names can be used without prefixing the word Abd before it, provided a precedent of being used for someone other than Allah can be found in either the Qur’an and Sunnah or the practice of the Ummah. For instance, the names Karim, Aziz, Rashid, etc.
3) Those names that fall in the second category, but a precedent cannot be found for it being used for someone other than Allah. These names should not be used without prefixing the word Abd. The reason thereof is that by default, these names are exclusive to Allah. Therefore, for it be used for someone other than Allah, a proof is needed. In the absence of a precedent, one should adopt caution and not use these names without the word Abd.
Accordingly, the name Raffi falls in the second category. Therefore, it will be permissible to name your child Raffi without the usage of Abd.[i]There was also a Sahabi by the name of Raffi Bin Khadeej (رافع بن خديج) (RadhiyallahuAnhu).

وهذا مشتهر في زماننا حيث ينادون من اسمه عبد الرحيم وعبد الكريم أو عبد العزيز مثلا فيقولون رحيم وكريم وعزيز بتشديد ياء التصغير ومن اسمه عبد القادر قويدر وهذا مع قصده كفر
ففي المنية من ألحق أداة التصغير في آخر اسم عبد العزيز أو نحوه مما أضيف إلى واحد من الأسماء الحسنى إن قال ذلك عمدا كفر وإن لم يدر ما يقول ولا قصد له لم يحكم بكفره ومن سمع منه ذلك يحق عليه أن يعلمه اه

اسمائے حسنی میں بعض نام ایسے بھی ہیں جن کو خود قرآن و حدیث میں دوسرے لوگوں کے لئے بھی استعمال کیا گیا ہے، اور بعض وہ ہیں جن کو سوائے ﷲ تعالی کے اور کسی کے لَئے استعمال کرنا قرآن و حدیث سے ثابت نہیں- تو جن ناموں کا استعمال غیرﷲ کے لئے قرآن و حدیث سے ثابت ہے وہ نام تو اورون کے لئے بھی استعمال ہو سکتے ہیں۔۔۔۔ اور اسماَئے حسنی مین سے وہ نام جن کا غیر ﷲ کے لئے استعمال کرنا قرآن و حدیث سے ثابت نہیں وہ صرف ﷲ تعالی کے لئے مخصوص ہیں ان کو غیر الله کے لئے استعمال کرنا الحاد مذکور مین داخل اور ناجائز و حرام ہے
